Panache Pomeranians
An Honest Breeder Putting Health First
Panache Pomeranians is a new breeder that has found that in this breed that I love so dearly there are health concerns that I was never told about. So I have worked hard to get to know the breed better and have read a lot of books and studied on-line to find out more. I have made a few friends that agree with me and are working on health concerns as well.
Health before color, not the other way around. Though there are those colors that everyone wants, so breeders tend to breed for what the public wants.
My first Pomeranian is a brindle girl that I was told was a blue. She was a puppy, perhaps the breeder didn't know. Then I bought an adult male, a beautiful Wolf Sable. Along my studies I had read that the true wolf sable was disappearing and I wanted to help the little I could to bring them back. Wolf Sables are truly beautiful! And I wanted to start breeding as soon as my girl was old enough, hence the reason I bought an adult male. Then I bought a tiny little adult Black girl from Russia that is as cute as can be with the most luscious coat and ear fringes. I started this venture in 2018, I still have not had a litter of puppies but we're working on it. Now that I've done my research I know I will now have healthier puppies than before. Everything happens for a reason.
My 3 adult dogs have 1 copy of Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). If I bred my male with either of my girls the only results would be more Poms with DM. This is one of the health concerns I'm working on removing from my breeding program. Puppies without DM will replace the adults with it. This of course will take time but I've already been at this for 3 years. What's a few more?
DM is only one of my concerns, so is heart disease, patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Luxating Patella is one of those things that a lot of pet owners don't know about. Hopefully we as breeders will start having our adults evaluated for all of these and we will start breeding Poms with only good knees, hips, hearts and no DM.
